Pioneer hats

So its summer time in Utah and everybody and his brother is going on trek! Those of you from any other state may not know what the hay trek is so I will tell you. When the Mormon pioneers came to Utah they came by wagon and also hand carts. Two groups of handcarts got caught in early winter storms and faced many hardships. These were the Martin and the Willie handcart companies. So today, to honor and learn about our great pioneer heritage, youth from the church return to Martin's cove and pull handcarts. They dress like pioneers and are allowed only the bare necessities. That brings me to this blog post. I have 3 daughters, 1 niece and a nephew going this year on trek. My sister is also going . Well I got out the pattern that I was given to make bonnets yesterday, and realized there were no measurementa for cutting, and sewing. I'm not THAT good, so I went on line and got a good pattern for bonnets . Thus prepared, I made bonnets. They were so easy I made one for not only my three girls but also my sister and niece and a neighbor. Then I made an apron. I was told that the aprons needed to have big pockets so they could hold water, sunscreen, and lip balm. I had already made 2 aprons of this sort for the play, "Fiddler On The Roof " that my girls were in in April, so I just made one more. Easy peesy lemon squeezy. But I thought since I had made bonnets for my sister and niece that my nephew would feel left out and unloved so ....Seth visited Nauvoo this spring and bought the most fun hat home. He looks real good in it too. I wanted to make Jacob (my nephew) one like it because it is authentic for the time, and many immigrants used this style hat. I tryed to find a pattern but could not. I could buy one for $15.00, but not make one. Then my lovely daughter Hanna called. I told her the problem, she said she would help and she did. She found some hats that were very like the one I wanted. I read the patterns instructions but they still were not exactly what I wanted. I just kept looking at Seth's hat. Finally I did it, I made a hat. It looked great. So I made one for Daxon  'cause he wanted one too. Then I thought Jacob might want to choose, so I made another. I took pictures so that anyone else can also make this men's cap . I also found out it is called an Irish work cap, not to be confused with the Irish flat cap or newsboy cap.

I know I look silly, I have it too low on my head.

First make your pattern : I use news print to draw mine on. Take a measurement of your head add a seam allowance and cut a piece of paper your head masurement plus seam allowance and 21/2 inches wide, this is your hat band. Draw a 17 inch circle this is the top of the hat. I did this without a compass, but a compass would have made it easier. Copy the bill of a baseball cap. I used Seth's original bill. It's a little smaller than a base ball cap.
Next you need scrap fabric. I don't know how much fabric I used. I just went through the scrap box, and for the lining I sewed some together to make it big enough.
You will need some kind of plastic for inside the bill. I did one hat with card board, but then it can't be washed as the bill will turn to mush, so for 2 of them I used plastic canvas.
 You are now ready to start.

Cut;
Hat band: one of fabric, When you cut the one of lining, make it the head measurement and seam allowance, then insted of 2 1/2 inches, make it 3 1/2 inches, as this extra is used to finish the inside seam of the hat

Bill:  cut 2 of fabric, but add extra for seam allowance, .cut one of plastic canvas.

Top of hat;  cut 17in. circle of lining and fabric

You should have  2 round pieces, 3 bills (one of plastic) 2 hat bands, one  2 1/2 in. one 3 1/2.

You are now ready to sew.

Take the two bills right sides together, sew around the top, leaving the bottom open. Turn right side out, press flat. Insert the plastic bill, then sew as closely as you can to the plastic, to close the bill.

Center the bill on the fabic head band, right sides together. Sew the bill to the hat band.

Now take the lining, and pin it to the head band, right sides together. Sew them together.

Next, sew the back seam. Make sure you have the fabric right side together.

Iron the hat band fold.

I like to add a little top stitch around the band at the fold, it helps them stay together.

Take the two circle,  wrong sides together. Sew around the edge.  Fold it in half, then ln half again. Mark each quarter fold. Do the same with the hat band.

Now, with right sides together, match the pins. Your hat top should be pinned to your hat band in four equal places.

I like to center my first pin in the middle of the bill.  If you do this it makes a nice symmetrical hat. On either side of the center bill pin make a pleat. I put 3 equal pleats in each quarter. I also made the pleats on the right face one way and on the left face the opposite. I just thought it looked cool that way. Sew your hat top to the hat band.

As you can see in this picture, you have the band lining sticking out further than the band.

After sewing, trim the band and top seam. Do not cut off the band lining.

Now take the band lining and fold it over 1/4 inch, then fold it again over the raw edge of the hat band seam.

Sew it in place.

Turn right side out, and Voila, you have an Irish work hat.

wow what a week

        This last week went by so quickly that I could hardly keep up . Last Sunday we had such a wonderful time at the baby blessing. I kept losing and forgetting my camera so I didn't get any good shots of the baby, this really bugged me, But I did have plenty of food and goodies made so I hope that made up for it. William and Natalie left us on Monday and took Tishel with them. Boy did the house get quiet! on Tuesday we had 4H sign ups. We are doing a leather craft class this year, I had 4 children sign up and I bought 5 kits just in case. I think we are going to have a lot of fun. On wednesday I vegitated, and on Thursday we went to my brother-in-laws funeral. I was so sad, and my sister-in-law was being so strong . It was heart wrenching. Friday was a very long day we left the house at around 9 to drive to Sandy. We stopped in Mt.pleasant to pick up Olivia. We had a bit of trouble finding her. We found her whole family tho! They finally we got her and we were off again. We had dinner at Aunt Dana's, then we went swimming at her condo. It was fun. When we got done, Seth said Robert had called and would be at Dana's when we got there . Robert was on his way to Enoc to get a car to make into a demolition derby car. Sounds fun to me! Saturday was an unbelievable day . We got up at 4:15am,  took Olivia, Seth, Debbie, and  Grandma to the airport. They were going Nauvoo. They had quite a time with plane problems, ended up in Nebraska, and drove to Aunt Eunice's house. Meawhile, we got in the car after dropping them off, and drove down to St George for the Lincoln Ward reunion (this is the ward Papi grew up in. It was very small and they really knew each other well. A lot of them live in Utah now so they get together once a year ) . We were in no hurry to leave and stayed till around six then picked up some plants at Uncle Raymond's house and headed home. We got to the rest stop just past parrowan before the turn off to bear valley, and there was a Spanish speaking family of 8 who's car had broken down. They were returning from a funeral in LA. and trying to get to Denver. We stayed with them while they got the tow truck, and since the tow truck would only take four people, we took the others back to Ceder city. By that time it was 11 pm. They offered to get us a hotel, but I needed to be home to teach today in R.S. so we left. We got home about1:00 am so we were up 21 hours yesterday! we slept later than usual but made it to church on time .

So that has been my week . Joys, Sorrows, Celebrations , and a very empty house with just Kieora and Dax, Today LuLu (sorry I'm supposed to say Lucia) has come to visit from the RR . So its not so quiet now!!!

New Projects By Papi

I have been married to Michael a long time. But his skill as a crafts man is always amazing me . Because he doesn't have a regular pay check right now he made these picnic tables to sell in hopes that we might make some money.

Seth is helping him and I noticed that Michael gets 2 times as much done the days that Seth is able to help.

So if you want one or know of some one who does . let them know we have them. The price is going to go down as Michael thinks that 320 is a better price then 499 . I think they are a still at what ever price that they are .

Now as for my life ,we just had the last day of school on Friday . It still does not seen real . but its true . we had a mancala tournament and also a ping pong tournament . I went on line to learn how to draw up the brackets my printer does not work so i just read the instructions . then when I got to school I started to draw it up on the board and got stuck I called in Tim to help and he figured it out for me . then I was telling the other teacher about it and I said there was a site that I could just put in the number of players and it would figure it all out for me but because my printer was broken I couldn't do that . As I was speaking I realized I could have just printed it at school.Some times I'm a little slow so for the doubles ping pong tournament I did just that . It was so easy . Ah well ,live and forget I guess the motto should be as we grow older ,instead of live and learn.

 I am really looking forward to the family coming for Thomas' baby blessing . I'm figuring beds right now . Its going to be so fun . I do wish that Hanna and Tyler could be here but times are hard all around right now. At least we are all fed and have a roof over our heads 

The truth is life is very nice right now

Being a Grandma

I raised my Children far from home . I now regret that . My grown children live many hours away from me . now they are having children of there own. I want so much to see them everyday . They change so fast . I want to be the Grandma like my grandma . She always had cinnamon rolls in the cookie jar or raisins in the cupboard or better yet a jar of canned raspberries  that she would get out when I came to visit . how can I be that type of grandma to my beautiful grand children who live so far from me . I don't even know if they really will know me at all.

I can not believe how much I love them .

I want to thank my sons and Daughter in laws for giving me the opportunity to be a grandma . And I hope that I can be the best grandma in the world
